IT'S AN ENTIRE QUARTER

The place now called Kölnisch Quartier looks back on a long rich history. As early as 1874, a factory was built here for a fragrance so closely tied to Cologne that the city's name became synonymous with the product – the original “cologne” of the 4711 brand. Destroyed in WW II air raids, its reconstruction started in 1950. The architects Wilhelm and Rudolf Koep created a landmark building in the company colours turquoise and gold. When the company relocated, it was converted into residential and retail units along with an underground car park of more than a thousand spots. Its prospects are bright: Kölnisch Quartier is undergoing a gradual and careful modernisation and upgrade process that is to be concluded by 2019.

1864

Named after a local address – 4711 Glockengasse – the brand started to make a name for itself in the nineteenth century, eventually attracting business from all over Europe.

1874

During the late nineteenth century, 4711 expanded worldwide. The premises on Glockengasse became too small to keep up with demand. The first 4711 manufacturing plant was raised in the Ehrenfeld district of Cologne.

1950

Postwar reconstruction of the plant was masterminded by the architects Wilhelm and Rudolf Koep.

1960

The reconstruction is concluded, and the “Blue-Gold Building” quickly became one of Cologne's landmark edifices.

1991/1992

Production ended in Cologne-Ehrenfeld. Sections of the factory building were granted protected heritage status.

1996

The protected compound was extensively redeveloped according to plans by architects Luczak and Jürgensen. A number of small companies move into the premises.

2015

Pinpoint measures are launched to keep enhancing the living and working ambience in this vibrant quarter.
